Spring 2009 Season

South Florida Baseball League
SPRING 2009 SEASON
History:
In its 34th season, the SFBL had 27 teams play in 3 different divisions of competive hardball.  The teams continued to play 12 regular season games with the top teams in each division continuing on to the playoffs.
In the MABL 18+ Premier Division, the Spring 2009 Season welcomed in two new teams as the South Dade Orioles formed and the Lauderdale Reds came up from the 25+ Senior Division.  But in the end, the Premier Division powerhouses, the Boca Red Sox (managed by Eric Lyon) and Coral Gables Athletics (managed by Miguel Garcia) would rule.  After splitting regular season games, the teams squared up in a memorable championship game which witnessed some great pitching from Matt Stubbs (A's) and Josh Remondelli (Sox).  The A's took the early lead in the contest off a big fly from Premier Division batting champ, Todd Alea, but the Sox marched back and took a late lead.  The A's would not back down as Luis Cabral won the game with a homerun to left with Stubbs on base and earn the 7-6 win in dramatic fashion.  This was the A's 5th SFBL Premier Division Championship, bringing them two away from the SFBL record.  In order to advance to the Championship game, the Sox (10-2) defeated the Lauderdale Reds (5-5), while the A's (7-3-1) defeated the Miami Polic Force (7-2-2).  The 8th Florida Hardball Championship which features the Premier Division Champs and the Fort Myers Harball Champs (Lee County Black Sox) has not been played as of yet.  The A's have won the championship, a record, 3 times.

The A's were led by Matt Stubbs all year as the skilled lefty finished with a 2-2 regular season record with a 3.08 ERA and earned both wins in the playoffs.  Stubbs was also a key hitter in the team's lineup with a .588 average.  The A's were also led by Robert Garcia who had a 5-1 regular season record.  Offensively, the A's were led by division batting champ Todd Alea who finished the season with a .538 batting average and 14 hits.
For the fourth time in team history and first time in almost six years, the Fort Lauderdale Yankees took home the Senior Division Championship Crown as they defeated the Miami Blues 11-9.  This game featured some of the best pitching in Senior Division play (Blues featured John Gawron and Andrew Lane) going against the big bats of the Yankees.  In the end, timely hitting for the Yanks and poor defense on the part of the Blues would give the crown to the Yanks.  The Yanks trailed the majority of the game, but scored 8 runs in their final three ABs to earn the win.  The Yanks were led by Pat Vadala who had 3 hits in the game.
The Fort Lauderdale Yankees were led all year by John Sandola, who finished the season with a 6-1 record on the hill with 50 Ks.  Offensively, the team was led by Jaime Siragusa who led the team with 15 hits and 15 RBI.  For the Blues, a note must be made on their pitching as Andrew Lane and John Gawron combined for an 8-1 record and had ERAs of 0.60 and 1.82.  Gawron also led the Blues in hitting with a .531 BA, 17 hits and 13 RBI.
In the Masters Division, the Broward Black Sox, managed by Scott Ferron, were looking for the 3-peat this year with another Masters' Division Championship but their run came to an end as the Broward Braves defeated the Sox 8-7 in come from behind fashion.  A big HR from Leo Artigas started the charge for the Braves who won their first SFBL Championship.   In order to advance to the Championship the Braves defeated the Broward Mets 8-1 while the Black Sox defeated the Miami Orioles 11-6.
Individually, Jesus Cagigasof the Broward Braves had an incredible season earning the division MVP.  The Braves ace finished the season with a 0.82 ERA and went the distance in the Championship Game.  He also finished the season with a .457 BA and led the team with 16 hits.  A special note: The single season strike out record was broken this season in the Masters 35+ Division as the Broward Mets' ace, Rick Carbello, finished the season with 60 K, breaking Joe Feller's record of 54.
