SPECIAL EVENTS
Holiday Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports, January (MLK Weekend)
Featuring MSBL teams from all over the nation, the Disney Classic has become one of the more popular national tournaments. It is played at the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves at Disney's Wide World of Sports, and features some of the best fields in Florida. This year the SFBL sent five teams to the tournament and each team made the playoffs. Despite not bringing home a trophy, the SFBL was well represented at this year's tournament.
SFBL Awards Bash, February
For the first time ever, the SFBL moved its Annual Awards Banquet outdoors and celebrated 2 years of successful baseball BBQ style at C.B. Smith Park in Ft. Lauderdale on February 2003. With over 100 players and family attending the Bash, it turned out to be quite a success. The Champions from the past 4 seasons were given their trophies. The players who led the League in the different Leaderboard categories were also given their trophies for their accomplishments. With ribs and chicken on the grill and the sense of a new season coming up, the Bash proved to be a great idea and the League Office hopes that this was a start of an annual outdoor cookout tradition.
Miami Open, May (Memorial Day Weekend)
The 6th Annual Miami Open was played on Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26, 2003. Just like last year, the tournament will be played in several fields in Miami Dade County with tough competition guaranteed. This year's tournament displayed phenomenal baseball as the Miami Miracle defeated the South Florida Mets in a memorable Championship Game. Special recognition must be given to Eric Enriquez who took home Tournament MVP honors as he belted 5 home runs in as many games.
Annual Summer League, July-August
With a demand for baseball year round, the SFBL announced the creation of Summer League in 2002. The league caters to those wanting to play year round with no break and to college players who are home for the summer. This 6-game mini-season takes place between the Spring and Fall seasons. The League has proven to be quite a success with 8 participating in last year's league and 6 teams in its inaugural season.
South Beach Slam, July (July 4th Weekend)
By popular demand, the South Florida Baseball League is rolled out the inaugural South Beach Slam in July of 2003. The concept.........fun and sun, and reggae and rock (and, oh, by the way, some hardball too) on famous South Beach, USA. The only way to celebrate Independence Day. Ya mon!
The South Beach Slam, which is played under an open division format (18 and over age bracket), will take place during the Independence Day weekend, July 4 - July 6, 2003 and will feature 8 teams participating in a three-game minimum round-robin tournament. The majority of the games will be played at Flamingo Park in South Beach, with some games being played in Coral Gables and Miami. The tournament champions will win a beautiful Championship Trophy and all tournament players will receive commemorative gold South Beach Slam medallions wrapped in USA flag ribbons. A tournament MVP trophy will also be awarded to the player with the best tournament performance as voted by the participating team managers.
All-Star Game, July
The SFBL will have its annual All-Star Game in July of this year. More information on the game will come shortly.
