2003 South Beach Slam

By popular demand, the South Florida Baseball League is rolling out the inaugural  South Beach Slam.  The concept.........fun and sun, and reggae and rock (and, oh, by the way, some hardball too) on famous South Beach, USA.  The only way to celebrate Independence Day.  Ya mon!

The South Beach Slam, which is played under an open division format (18 and over age bracket), will take place during the Independence Day weekend, July 4 - July 6, 2003 and will feature 8 teams participating in a three-game minimum round-robin tournament.  The majority of the games will be played at Flamingo Park in South Beach, with some games being played in Coral Gables and Miami.

Dates:

July 3, 2003 - Managers Meeting  8pm - 9pm  at "Monty's on the Beach" poolside

Mandatory Managers Meeting is at the waterfront restaurant, Monty's on the Beach, on South Beach on Thursday evening at 8:00pm poolside (twist my arm).  Managers are to submit rosters, fees and waiver forms and receive tournament kits, baseballs and gold tournament medals for all participating players. July 4, 2003 - Each team plays a doubleheader at 9:00am and 1:30pm.  See below for schedules, brackets, etc.

July 5, 2003 - Each team plays a final elimination game at 9:00am.  Semi-finalists play at 2:00pm.

July 6, 2003 - Championship 10:00am

Registration:

Tournament Entry Fee is $650 per team.  18 years old minimum age requirement, proof of age required.  20 man maximum roster size.  Team Rosters and Team Liability Waiver form required.  The tournament champions will win a beautiful Championship Trophy and all tournament players will receive commemorative gold South Beach Slam medallions wrapped in USA flag ribbons.  A tournament MVP trophy will also be awarded to the player with the best tournament performance as voted by the participating team managers.  Any teams interested in playing in the tournament should call the League Office at 305.663.2521.  The entry deadline is July 1, 2003.

As is customary, the League will form a League Team for all interested League members who do not have a team to play on.  All players interested in playing in the tournament are asked to contact the League Office.

The tournament will consist of two brackets, the American and National Division.  Each team will play 3 games within their respective bracket and the teams with the highest number of points will move on to the playoffs. 

Playoff Qualifiers:  Teams qualify for the playoffs based on the following point system:

Points:    Win = 2 points, Tie = 1 point, Loss = 0 points.  

The team with the greatest number of points wins its division. However, in case of a tie, use the tie-breaker rules detailed below.  The first place and second place teams in each bracket after the 3-game elimination round will advance to the semifinals.  The division winners play the second place teams in the opposite brackets, i.e. American Division winner plays the second place team in the National Division.

Tie Breaker Rules:  Tie breakers are applied in the following order:

1.  Head-to-head result

2.  Fewest Runs Allowed:  If no head-to-head result, the team with the fewest runs allowed will win the second tie breaker.

3.  Net Runs:  In case of another tie, an equation of net runs will be employed and the team with the greatest number of net runs wins the third tie breaker.  Net Runs = (Runs Scored - Runs Allowed).

4.  Coin Toss:  In case of a third tie, a best-of-three coin toss will determine the final tie breaker.

Tournament Rules

The South Beach Slam is played under the rules undertaken by the South Florida Baseball League.  A copy of the SFBL Official Rules and Regulations will be provided to each participating team.  To access the rules immediately, click on the underlined reference.  Some imperative rules are as follows:

1.  In each team's offensive line-up, a minimum 10 batters must be used.  You may add to this minimum at any time during the game but you may not shrink the line-up once expanded.

2.  Free defensive substitution.  As implied, no restrictions on defensive changes except for the pitcher re-entry rule.

3.  Pitcher Re-entry Rule:  In the case of a pitching change, once a pitcher is removed, he can only be re-entered as a pitcher after one complete inning  has been played.  This move can only be done once per game.

4.  No deliberate physical contact between base runners and defensive players, i.e. NO BARRELING INTO THE CATCHER, SECOND BASEMAN, etc.  Automatic ejection penalty.

5.  3 hour time limit = no inning shall start after 3 hours has elapsed.  Tie games permitted - see tie breaker rules.

6.  In case of rain, official game only after 5 full innings completed.  Games started but not registering 5 complete innings will be suspended and completed later.  Offensive line-ups remain frozen and the suspended game must pick up where it left off.

7.  All team managers must call in game results - win or lose- to the SFBL office 305.663.2521 within 10 minutes of game completion or suspension.  All results will be posted to this website page live throughout the tournament.
